About this Event
As part of the closing weekend for ¡VIVA LA RAZA! Reflections on San Diego’s Chican@ Movement, Subcultura Curation and The Woo present a special screening of ASCO: WITHOUT PERMISSION directed by Travis Gutiérrez Senger.
The film profiles the groundbreaking Los Angeles Chicano art collective ASCO — featuring Patssi Valdez, Harry Gamboa Jr., Willie Herrón, and Gronk — whose work merged activism and art while confronting representation in the art world, Hollywood, and mainstream media throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Long overlooked in their time and now recognized among the most influential artists of the 20th century, ASCO’s legacy continues to shape conversations around art, identity, resistance, and cultural visibility today.
Blending nonfiction and fiction through collaborations with a new generation of Latinx artists, ASCO: WITHOUT PERMISSION reimagines what is possible in cinema and contemporary art while honoring a collective that existed radically ahead of its time.
Executive produced by Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.
The screening will take place alongside the closing reception for Aztlán Libre + Aztlan Archives as part of the final month of ¡VIVA LA RAZA!, a multi-room exhibition reflecting on the past and present of San Diego’s Chican@ movement through archives, photography, public art, and community storytelling.
Come as you are! — expressive, experimental, dressed up, dressed down, dramatic, understated, neighborhood chic, art school energy, or full barrio avant-garde. In the spirit of ASCO, we invite you to take up space, be seen, and celebrate creative expression in all its forms.
RSVP seating is available through a suggested donation to help support future community programming, exhibitions, and cultural events by Subcultura Curation.
This event remains open to the public and all are welcome to attend regardless of RSVP.
