Earls Court Gallery is pleased to present As It Fades, Something Emerges, a two-person exhibition featuring the evocative and process-driven works of Erin Whitten Crysdale and Shinae Kim. The exhibition brings together two contemporary Canadian painters whose practices explore the fragile, often-overlooked relationships between humans and the natural world, and the expressive possibilities of figuration reimagined through abstraction.
Erin Whitten Crysdale investigates the vulnerable and neglected bonds between humans and the natural world—connections that now urgently demand our attention. Her paintings highlight endangered species and the fading imprint of ecological memory, using narrative imagery to advocate for restoration and renewal. With rhythmic patterns and vibrant repetition, Whitten Crysdale invites the viewer into complex compositions where animals appear at the edge of the canvas, poised in motion—on the verge of departure—prompting reflection on what may be lost if we do not act.
Shinae Kim, drawing inspiration from historical figurative painting, reinterprets group figures through expressive abstraction. With dynamic brushwork and intuitively chosen colour palettes, she transforms classical gestures into contemporary forms. Her paintings blur the boundary between past and present, advancing traditional visual language while preserving its emotional resonance.
As It Fades, Something Emerges will be on view in the main gallery at 215 Ottawa Street North, Hamilton. Earls Court Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. All artworks will also be available to view online upon installation
