About this Event

Artist Anne Robinson will present her new work 'The Charmers' (2024), currently on show at MAKE.

‘The Charmers’ are a (possibly fictional) band, formed by seven runaway 'witches'. discovered on a 17th century scroll when the artist was researching the Scottish witch trials: recorded as ‘gone away’ ‘not to be found’. They've made a 4-track vinyl EP and are ready to go out on tour..

The Scottish witch trials of the 16th and 17th Centuries are known to be amongst the most brutal in the world. During archival investigations, Anne found scrolls showing a group of seven accused ‘witches’ in Ayrshire, recorded as ‘not to be found’. Speculating from these fragments, and working with film, text, drawing, songs, and performance, she has developed the work around a ‘sci-fi folk ballad’.

In this work, the accused 'witches' abscond using the very conjuring they are accused of: transported away out of their cells to form a band of queer time-travelling players, on tour with their familiars to historical moments of rebellion and change. This is visual arts project in diverse forms: short films, performance, exhibition, sound, ballads, prints, drawings, gatherings, workshops and conversations.

Anne's art practice is mainly film based, often collaborative: concerned with the perception and politics of time passing, and working speculatively with archives to ‘listen to the past’. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including recent screenings and shows at: The Hurrier (2021), Poor on the Roll (2021) Wakeful (2018) and Thrashing in the Static (2014) include CCA Glasgow, Whitechapel, APT, Southwark Park Galleries, Feminist Library and BFI. She was a commissioned artists for ‘Queer Times’ at GoMA in 2018 and as a member of See Red Women’s Workshop, featured in ‘Women in Revolt!’ 2023-24 at Tate Britain and Modern 2 in Edinburgh. She has have a practice-led PhD and is Director of Programmes for Fine Art at Middlesex University.
