Artist Walkthrough: Listening Space with Afroditi Psarra and Audrey Briot
Join us for an artist walkthrough of "Listening Space: Textiles in Dialogue with Atmospheric Data," a collaborative research project and exhibition by THE BLANC's Artists-in-Residence, Audrey Briot and Afroditi Psarra.
During this guided session, the artists will walk viewers through their installation, sharing insights into their creative process, the technology behind intercepting satellite data, and the translation of electromagnetic signals into physical textiles.
Date and Time: Saturday, June 6, 2026 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT
Location: THE BLANC, 15 E 40th Street, 2F, New York, NY 10016
About the Exhibition
Listening Space offers a poetic exploration of weather patterns in the Anthropocene, transforming the invisible electromagnetic signals that saturate our atmosphere into tangible textile artifacts.
The installation intercepts transmissions from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather satellites as they orbit overhead. Using wearable, hand-crafted antennas and software-defined radios, the artists capture these signals as raw material for both citizen science and artistic expression. These intercepted data streams, reflecting the state of the Earth's atmosphere, are decoded in real time and physically archived through knitted textiles produced on digitally controlled knitting machines.
By translating electromagnetic energies into tactile fibers, Briot and Psarra invite viewers to consider the political and social implications of who has the power to "listen" to and "decode" the planet's changing climate.
This exhibition is presented with generous support from THE BLANC, DXARTS, and SRC Material.
About the Artists
Psarra and Briot have been collaborating on Listening Space since 2019. Their work has been recognized with the Bergstrom Award for Art and Science (2020) and has been exhibited and performed globally, including at LABoral (Spain), Onassis Stegi (Greece), Jacob Lawrence Gallery (Seattle), ISWC (International Symposium on Wearable Computers) (UK), and ISEA (International Symposium of Electronic Arts) (Canada).
Afroditi Psarra, PhD, is a multidisciplinary artist and an associate professor at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on the use of the body as an interface of control and the revitalization of tradition as a methodology for hacking existing norms about technical objects.
Audrey Briot is a French artist and practice-based researcher working at the intersection of textile design, speculative practice, and research. As the co-founder of the DataPaulette collective, she develops hybrid systems combining craft techniques, open-source electronics, and environmental signals.
