Join us January 7th at 6pm for an artist talk with Pat Gilmartin, the current artist in our rotating gallery.Pat Gilmartin was born in Atlanta, Georgia, but has lived in a number of other places - including W. Palm Beach, FL; Lawrence, KS; and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - before settling about 30 years ago in Columbia, SC. She moved to Columbia to accept an offer from the Department of Geography at USC to teach cartography.
She retired from that position in 2004 and moved on to pursue an interest that had called to her for much of her earlier life. She wanted to be an artist.
Starting with a class in clay sculpture at Parks and Recreation, she began her journey to build a new life around art. Today she is perhaps best known for her ceramic sculptures, her focus for almost 20 years. However, she recently discovered the (totally unrelated!) process of creating cyanotype prints (sun prints) and has been intrigued by them ever since. She is especially interested in the experimental side of cyanotypes - the uncontrolled aspects and unexpected outcomes of the process that continuously surprise and occasionally delight the maker.
Still mostly self-taught, Pat sees many possibilities to expand the artistic applications of cyanotypes. All she asks is the time to follow her dreams even further.
