ABOUT THE ARTIST: For nearly thirty years, Cheryl Capezzuti (Pittsburgh, PA) has used the discards of American life as sculptural media to explore the human condition. What began as a humorous look at the banality of domestic life through the exploration of lint took a poignant turn in 1999; after the loss of her grandmother, Capezzuti began to view these fibers as physical remnants of lived experience, shifting her focus toward themes of love, loss, and memory. In response to the 2020 pandemic, she returned to dryer lint as her primary medium, utilizing it to reflect the contemporary American state of mind. By pairing this ephemeral material with sturdy metal armatures, she has created hundreds of large-scale, archival sculptures that remain deeply rooted in community.
ABOUT THE PROJECT: Capezzuti’s latest work uses residential dryer lint in figurative works that connect to what it feels like to be human right now. Savannah residents are invited to participate in the project by donating a bag of dryer lint along with a short, handwritten note that tells something about who they are, what they wash and how they feel about doing laundry. Donations will be used to create works of art that will be displayed in the ON::View residency space. Capezzuti’s work will also be on display in The Ellis Gallery beginning Friday, July 3rd, as part of "Rooted", a group exhibition curated by guest curator Lisa Jaye Young.

In support of her Residency project, Capezzuti has been awarded an Artist Opportunity Grant from the Greater Pittsburgh Council for the Arts.
