Hawy Rahman (*1972 in Bagdad, Irak) ist ein Bildhauer, Performance- und Konzeptkünstler, der in Wien lebt und arbeitet. Nach einem Studium der Bildhauerei am College für Schöne Künste in Bagdad und an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien setzt er sich in seiner künstlerischen Praxis seit Jahrzehnten mit den existenziellen Spuren von Krieg, Erinnerung und Identität auseinander.
In diesem Artist Talk blickt Hawy Rahman auf Themen wie Erinnerung, Ort, Vertreibung und die Auswirkungen von Krieg auf persönliche und kollektive Identitäten. Ausgangspunkt seiner Erzählung sind drei eng verbundene Begriffe des arabischen Denkens: al-Makan (der Ort), al-Hadath (das Ereignis) und der Mensch dazwischen. Der Künstler erinnert sich daran, wo der Irak-Iran-Krieg begann, an den olivgrünen Uniformstoff seines Vaters – ein Symbol, das vor dem Krieg für Schutz und Mut stand, später aber Furcht und Verlust verkörperte. Er erzählt vom Duft der Orangenbäume Bagdads, einem Sinnbild für die friedvolle Vergangenheit der Stadt inmitten der Realität der 1980er Jahre.
Im Gespräch teilt er, wie sich persönliche Erinnerungen in künstlerisches Material verwandeln, wie Krieg Symbole neu formt und wie menschliche Verbindungen neue Perspektiven auf Orte und Erfahrungen eröffnen. Hawy Rahman spricht zudem über seine künstlerische Praxis und seine Zusammenarbeit mit Peter Garmusch - von gemeinsamen Roadtrips durch den Levanten über Projekte wie Studio Cairo bis zu seiner Arbeit in Ägypten. Die Veranstaltung lädt dazu ein, über die transformativen Kräfte von Erinnerung, Farbe, Geruch und Raum nachzudenken und den Blick auf das Vertraute neu auszurichten.

Hawy Rahman (*1972 in Baghdad, Iraq) is a sculptor, performance, and conceptual artist based in Vienna. After studying sculpture at the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, his artistic practice has, for decades, engaged with the lasting traces of war, memory, and identity. Deeply shaped by the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in 1980 and the conflicts that followed, Hawy Rahman’s work reflects on the fragility of spaces, bodies, and lived experience.
In this Artist Talk, Hawy Rahman reflects on memory, place, displacement, and the impact of war on personal and collective identities. His narrative is rooted in three interconnected concepts from Arabic thought: al-Makan (place), al-Hadath (event), and the human being in between. The artist recalls where the Iran-Iraq War began and the olive-coloured uniform of his father - a symbol that once stood for protection and courage, but later came to embody fear and loss. He also evokes the scent of Baghdad’s orange trees, a sensory reminder of the city’s peaceful past amid the realities of the 1980s.
The conversation explores how personal memory becomes artistic material, how war reshapes symbols, and how human connections open new ways of understanding place and experience. Hawy Rahman also speaks about his artistic practice and his collaboration with Peter Garmusch - from shared road trips across the Levant to projects such as Studio Cairo and his work in Egypt. The Artist Talk invites audiences to reflect on the transformative power of memory, colour, scent, and space, and to re-examine the familiar from new perspectives.
