Valley House Gallery is honored to present the solo exhibition "Gail Norfleet: Connecting Faraway Places" with work inspired by Morocco and New Mexico.
Curator Judy Tedford Deaton writes about Gail Norfleet’s recent retrospective exhibition at The Grace Museum in Abilene:
“Gail Norfleet creates complex, vividly-colored and detailed compositions that reveal her love of nature and exotic locales. Paint floating on transparent surfaces reveal the artist’s ephemeral memories as though compressed by time. Flowers, interiors, and scenery intertwine to create a heightened dreamlike experience captured within the frame.”
Plexiglass continues to be a foundational element in Gail Norfleet's work. The inherent transparency of the material allows light to illuminate multiple painted layers and enables the development of spatial relationships and collaged narratives. Gail Norfleet reflects:
"My training as a printmaker has influenced the way I work today. Early on, I was known for my monoprints that were painted on plexiglass and then printed on paper with an etching press. The technique was painterly and immediate. The ghost image left on the plexiglass was always intriguing. More and more, the possibility of using the painted plexiglass as the finished piece became apparent. The transparency, and looking through one layer to the next, set up all sorts of spatial possibilities."
Gail Norfleet earned her BFA at The University of Texas at Austin, and her MFA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art, Longview Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of the Southwest in Midland, and The Grace Museum in Abilene. In addition to her recent solo exhibition at The Grace Museum, Norfleet has had solo exhibitions at the Michelson Museum of Art in Marshall, The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, DW Gallery, Delahunty Gallery, and Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, where she taught art for many years. This is Gail Norfleet's eighth solo exhibition at Valley House Gallery.
