Join Napa artists Nancy Willis and Iranian American Afsoon Razavi, Oakland based Palestinian artist Asma Ghanen & moderator Ann Trinca in conversation about the varitey of ways artists use their practice to respond to global events.
Asma Ghanem is a Palestinian artist, experimental musician, and writer. Asma has two degrees in audio-visual arts from the International Academy of Arts in Palestine in 2013 (BA) and a M.A from the University of Fine Arts in Toulouse-France in 2016.
Asma’s artistic and musical works are connected to her childhood and are centered around essential components such as the concept of homeland, the sonic experience under occupation, the world of imagination, and love stories in an occupied place.
Asma received two production grants from The Arab Fund for Culture and Arts, including one for her project which was based on field research in all refugee camps in the West Bank.
Afsoon Razavi is an Iranian-American multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer living and working in Napa, California. Through her work, she explores themes of beauty, identity, resistance and social justice.
In 2023, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art featured her charcoal drawing series Of My Own Free Will in the group exhibit Figure Telling: Contemporary Bay Area Figuration. The series’ black and white theme of free-flowing hair was viscerally inspired by Iranian women’s public protests and courageous acts of self-determination.
Afsoon has been a recipient of the Arts Council Napa Valley’s Community Fund Grant in 2023 and 2024 for her Napa Valley Wildlife Murals at the Napa Library, which integrate painted depictions of local wildlife into urban space as a reminder of our shared ecosystems and coexistence.
Ann Trinca (moderator) Ann Trinca is curator and photographer living in San Francisco. Her work explores themes of color, spirituality, and human interaction. As an independent curator, Trinca has produced numerous group and solo exhibitions including regional and international artists. Recent curatorial projects include the exhibitions Ofrendas: Our Ancestors Live In Us at SAQ Gallery in Mexico City; Echoes of Resilience at Harvey Milk Photography Center in San Francisco.
Nancy Willis is an artist and curator in Napa Valley. She received an M.F. A. in painting from San Francisco Art Institute, (2005) Through her painting and printmaking practice, Willis explores themes of human connection centered around daily life. Her work has been featured in numerous national and Bay Area exhibitions, including Women Artists Making Their Mark at O Hanlon Art Center, Mill Valley, CA and Human Rights, at the College of the Sequoias.
In 2025, Willis was awarded the Helen Frankenthaler Residency at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, Ct. Many of the works in Fragile Light, were created during that time.
