Join Photographer Miles Clark, our Artist-in-Residence, for a program focusing on eco-friendly methods for developing 35mm film. Clark will offer a live demonstration on how to develop black-and-white film using five ingredients commonly found in the average household: distilled water, coffee, salt, washing soda, and vitamin C powder.Together, these ingredients create a photographic developer known as caffenol. This process produces no harsh byproducts, poses no danger to the skin or body, and impacts the water supply as a load of laundry or cup of coffee would. The method can be performed without running water, making it an ideal darkroom practice for a live demonstration. The resulting photographs feature rich contrast and pronounced grain, creating a timeless aesthetic that mirrors the mood and atmosphere of Mackinac Island itself.
