About this Event

Austin,TX- Vist an indoor Latinx art and arts and crafts market at the Artisan Mercado, 506 Congress Avenue in downtown Austin, Texas. The Mercado, fashioned after markets in Latin America, operates from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the first and third Saturday from June through December. Besides featuring handcrafted arts and crafts, the art market also has Austin, Texas souvenirs including earrings, pendants, paintings, wooden crafts, as well as a wide selection of clothing and items from Mexico and Latin America.

At our Grand Opening on June 7, 2025, shoppers can participate in hourly drawings of artisanal products and enjoy coffee and pan dulce.

Throughout the year, the market will also host art classes and workshops directed by local artists and artisans as well as book launches, poetry readings and historical and cultural presentations.

The Artisan Mercado, in is in its eighth season, was started by husband and wife team Claudio López, a jewelry designer, and Irma Orozco, a bilingual communication consultant, in 2016. It was a pop-up, outdoor market along Congress Avenue at several different locations until 2020 when it moved indoors at La Peña Gallery. After a two year hiatus during the Pandemic, the market resumed in 2024 at its present location. Joining the couple as partners are internationally acclaimed Mexican painter Gildalorena Martínez, Puebla textile artisan Efigenia Romero and Colombian woodcrafter Marcela Dcroz.

The Latinx art market joins Mexic-Arte Museum, Republic Square Park and Saltillo Plaza along the 5th Street Mexican-American Heritage Corridor, reminiscent of the Mexican and Mexican American neighborhood that stood here until 1928 when the community was relocated to East Austin.
