ART DECO CITY, GRAFFITI & THE STETTHEIMER DOLLHOUSE
FEB 11 @ 11AM -1PM
$100 pp (includes museum admission)
Experience the Museum of the City of New York, overlooking Central Park on Fifth Avenue's famous Museum Mile with Debbie Wells as your guide. It's a beautiful adventure in NYC style!
The story of Art Deco City is synonymous with NYC style ! If you are a fan of Art Deco, you will see a stunning display of architecture, fashion design and culture in the 1920s-30s. Be dazzled by over 250 postcards from the collection of Leonard A. Lauder as well as decorative arts, fashion design, photography, drawings, and architectural models.
Fast forward a few decades to another museum exhibition, Above Ground: Martin Wong Graffiti Collection. The contrast to the stylized Art Deco theme is clear as we explore the street art and graffiti art starting in the 1970s. Enjoy art by the artists who transitioned from illegally writing on subway cars to exhibiting works in galleries and museums. Artists part of this unique and vibrant subculture included Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Lady Pink, Futura 2000 and more.
The museum's beloved Stettheimer Dollhouse, is back after a recent restoration. In this ongoing exhibition, you will learn the story of the Stettheimer sisters (Carrie, Ettie, and Florine), best known in the 1920s for their highly sought-after salon hosted in their swanky Manhattan home for the avant-garde artistic circle. It's easy to immerse yourself into the charming dollhouse rooms with intricate decor and authentic miniature artworks created by greats like Marcel Duchamp. Also on view are a collection of stylized dolls created in the 1970s by John Darcy Noble. The dolls playfully personified figures in the Stettheimer circle, like Gertrude Stein and Edward Steichen, as well as the "Stetties" themselves.
Top-Bottom: Entrance to the Museum of the CIty of New York, Postcard at the Art Deco CIty exhibition Inside the Stettheimer Dollhouse, and art from the Grafitti Collection exhibition.
