Nam Kirn has been an artist in Portland for 35 years and an art teacher for 15 years. Her work is expressive, instinctive, and bold. Movement plays a regular theme in her work, inspired by her love of dance.This show is a small glimpse into the creative passion and talent of one of our local artists.
Artist Statement
From a young age, I was drawn to the world of art. My passion deepened during a transformative 15-year apprenticeship with professional artist Margarita Leon. In her studio, a space designed for young people to create and learn about art, I explored a diverse range of media—painting with various types of paint, sculpting with clay, and discovering the intricacies of exhibiting artwork in galleries. This experience not only honed my technical skills but also taught me some of the professional aspects of being an artist, from hanging shows to selling my own work.
Working alongside Margarita, I also developed a love for teaching, learning how to guide children through creative processes and share a range of artistic techniques. This naturally evolved into a career as an art teacher, where I continue to inspire young artists while actively creating my own work.
Throughout my artistic journey, I have alternated between painting and sculpture, finding solace and joy in each medium. Dance and movement are also integral parts of my life, and my experience as a dancer profoundly influences my art. I strive to infuse my paintings with a sense of movement, capturing the sensations of calm and excitement that dance brings me. My work seeks to evoke these feelings, inviting viewers to experience the rhythm and flow that inspire my creative process.
