Join run leaders Kathryn (Two Rock Outdoor) and Alicia on an Art O'Neill Route Recce! A super opportunity to experience the route in a supportive environment. Those signed up for AON and runners with an interest in the route are all welcome.
This is a 4 hour run (approximately) and will be a crossing of the second mountain section. Runners will park/meet at Glenmalure, Baravore (our run finish) and we will have bus transfer to Ballinagee (our run start) thanks to Two Rock Outdoor.
Maps and compasses are available to borrow for the day. There will be opportunities to explore route choices and assistance in map reading and setting/running off compass bearings.
As this route contains challenging terrain (minimal trail, blanket bog, river crossings) previous mountain running experience is necessary.
Level: Int (If you're not sure if this run is for you, please contact us before booking).
'The Art O'Neill Challenge takes place every January. It's organised by and solely for the benefit of, Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team. It is a 60km route that retraces the historic escape of Art O'Neill, Henry O'Neill and Red Hugh O'Donnell, from Dublin Castle on January 6th, 1592. On a freezing night the three headed on foot towards Glenmalure, across the mountains. Art, who the challenge is named after, sadly succumbed to hypothermia on the way. ' - www.artoneill.ie
