Join us in February to hear acclaimed art history lecturer, Stella Grace Lyons’s illuminating talk on Whistler.
Whistler could be both exasperating and enchanting at the same time.
Accounts describe him as arrogant, pugnacious and difficult. Even he acknowledged this, calling his autobiography ‘The Gentle Art of Making Enemies’.
His paintings were as delicate as his personality was aggressive. Influenced by the Art for Art’s Sake movement, he aspired to a style of painting inspired by musical composition, calling his paintings Nocturnes, Arrangements or Harmonies. His best paintings shimmer with colour and emotion.
This talk will explore a selection of his works, including the work at the centre of one of the most scandalous legal trials in Art History. Expect some fireworks!
‘Without sacrificing scholarship, Stella Grace Lyons has a most engaging way of hooking an audience into sharing her passionate interest in art history, drawing three dimensional human stories and experiences from the two-dimensional canvas'
- Maev Kennedy, Guardian Arts Correspondent
Following the talk, please stay for tea and cake, served in the Pavilion’s beautiful Gallery.

Ymunwch â ni ym mis Chwefror i glywed sgwrs ddifyr y darlithydd hanes celf o fri, Stella Grace Lyons ar Whistler.
Gallai Whistler fod yn gyffrous ac yn swynol ar yr un pryd.
Mae cyfrifon yn ei ddisgrifio fel haerllug, anghwrtais ac anodd. Cydnabu hyn, gan alw ei hunangofiant yn 'The Gentle Art of Making Enemies'.
Roedd ei luniau mor sensitif ag oedd ei bersonoliaeth yn ymosodol. Wedi'i ddylanwadu gan y mudiad Art for Art's Sake, roedd yn dyheu am arddull o baentio a ysbrydolwyd gan gyfansoddi cerddorol, gan alw ei luniau’n Nocturnes, Arrangements neu Harmonies. Roedd ei luniau gorau yn disgleirio gyda lliw ac emosiwn.
Bydd y sgwrs hon yn archwilio detholiad o'i weithiau, gan gynnwys y gwaith yng nghanol un o'r treialon cyfreithiol mwyaf gwarthus yn Hanes Celf. Disgwyliwch ychydig o dân gwyllt!
‘Heb aberthu ysgolheictod, mae Stella Grace Lyons yn defnyddio dull hynod ddifyr o ennyn diddordeb cynulleidfa i rannu ei brwdfrydedd dros hanes celf, gan dynnu straeon a phrofiadau dynol tri dimensiwn o’r cynfas dau ddimensiwn’
- Maev Kennedy, Gohebydd Celfyddydau The Guardian
Ar ôl y sgwrs, mae croeso mawr i chi aros i gael te a theisen gartref flasus, wedi'u gweini yn Oriel hardd y Pafiliwn.
