Art History Lecture Series
Pre-Raphaelite Dawns
Fridays 8 November - 6 December
10:15am – 12:15pm
Northampton Museum & Art Gallery
In 1848, the year of Revolutions, a group of young artists founded a movement which would shake and re-shape artistic culture in Britain. Rejecting the Royal Academy’s expectations, these artistic revolutionaries sought inspiration from wider artistic traditions, often finding their subject matter in the life and literature of the High Victorian Age. The original Brotherhood was rapidly augmented by a wider circle of creative women and men and successive generations adopted and extended the Pre-Raphaelite vision. Using examples from the museum’s art collection, join us as we consider the innovations and insights of this movement and how they can be traced in visual culture to the present day.
