About this Event

In May, join us for a workshop where you will create a personalized mixed-media banner alongside guest artist Mai-Lan Tomkins. Presented in celebration of Asian Heritage Month, this event will introduce participants to traditional textile techniques from Southeast Asian cultures while showcasing works and photographs from our collections.

This event is in english. A workshop will be offered in French on Saturday, May 16, 2026 in the morning.

What is the Art from the Archives series?

Designed to spark your creativity, this series invites you to explore the lesser-known artworks from the collections preserved at LAC. Each workshop begins with a brief presentation of selected artworks and archives, followed by a creative activity led by a local artist. All materials are provided, and no experience is necessary!

For more information, please email [email protected].

About the artist

Mai‑Lan Tomkins (pronounced like my-lahn) is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose practice often engages with textiles, history, and photography. For over five years, Mai‑Lan has facilitated and led arts education programs across the Ottawa‑Gatineau region, including at the Ottawa Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Canada. A proud Vietnamese Canadian, their cultural identity offers one of many lenses through which they connect with stories, materials, and shared expressions.

If registration shows full, you may still come in person at 395 Wellington St. on the day of the workshop. Spots may become available at the last minute due to cancellations.
