The art of portraiture or the idea of representing oneself through art has been around for thousands of years. Whether instantly recognizable or shrouded in symbolism, artists say a lot about themselves, or the sitter, by what they choose to include in a work.Join Benton educators for an interactive two-part workshop exploring a theme from the exhibitions on view. Using works from the current exhibition Encounters with the Collection: Exploring America at 250, which range from the 18th century to a new acquisition created in the 21st century by artist Sarah Sense, we will explore how both material and pop culture can help convey information regarding one’s identity. Then step into our education center to create your own self portrait collage. What items will you choose to represent yourself?
