Learn the fundamentals of realistic drawing with Roosevelt “Rosey” Stephens — longtime Telegraph Avenue artist and People’s Park organizer. Rosey began sketching portraits on Telegraph in the 1970s after studies at Laney College (illustration, drawing, storyboarding). For decades he’s taught informal sessions at the park and on the Avenue, mentoring neighbors and students in a grounded, observational style.
What you’ll learn: proportion and measurement, gesture and contour, perspective, light–shadow modeling, edges, composition, portrait basics, and storyboarding for scenes. No experience required.
Schedule: Date/Time TBD. Ask Rosey in person at the Mad Monk corner (Haste & Telegraph, Berkeley) for current days and times. Some sessions may be held in the Rochdale “Ice Room.”
Bring: sketchbook (9×12 or larger), pencils (HB–4B), eraser, sharpener; optional: charcoal, kneaded eraser, clip board.
Who it’s for: beginners to returning artists; open to all ages.
