About this Event
Flying for Britain, a short film by Amanda Epe (11:15 – 12:00)
'Flying for Britain' is a drama-documentary that follows Johnny Smythe from Sierra Leone, West Africa, to recruitment into the wartime RAF and his experiences of combat flying as the navigator of a Stirling Bomber.
In June 1948, Flight Lieutenant Smythe was the Welfare Officer on board the Empire Windrush, and the film explores the crucial role he played in shaping modern Britain. The drama also highlights other notable RAF personnel Sam King and Baron Baker's contribution to the Windrush legacy.
Pilots of the Caribbean, talk by Peter Devitt, RAF Curator (12:00 - 13:00)
In 1939, the population of the Caribbean stood at less than three million people. From this, a total of 6,000 Black Caribbean men volunteered for the RAF, 5,500 serving as ground staff and some 450 as aircrew. Another 80 women joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). Over 150 of the Black flyers were killed: a loss rate of one in three.
Please join the Windrush Taskforce on Armistice Day to discuss the contribution made by the men and women who volunteered to fight for Britain during WWII.
