Legal Luminaries—Lighting the Path
The Arkansas Bar Association’s Legal Hall of Fame Speaker Series is a free event designed to give attendees an opportunity to interact with featured guests in an intimate setting. The featured guest this evening is former United States Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater.
Secretary Slater grew up in Marianna, Arkansas. He graduated from Eastern Michigan University with degrees in political science and communication. He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law and served as an Arkansas Assistant Attorney General. He was appointed to the Arkansas Highway Commission and was the first African American director of the Federal Highway Administration. He served as United States Secretary of Transportation from 1997 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton where he promoted a safer, efficient, environmentally sound and sustainable worldwide transportation infrastructure.
Secretary Slater's vast political and legal career has garnered him numerous accolades and respect from colleagues worldwide including the National Bar Association President's Award, the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, induction into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame, and a seat on the Atkins Global Board, United Way Worldwide Board, and National Smithsonian Board. He is a partner with Squire Patton Boggs and with James Lee Witt Associates.
A reception will take place at 4:30 pm in the Arkansas Civics Education Center, located within the Justice Building. The event will commence at 5:00 pm with a question-and-answer session concluding the proceedings. Guests are invited to participate in the discussion. Parking is available in any lot on Marshall Street in front of the Justice Building.
