About this Event
We are delighted to welcome this world class award winning jazz trio for an exciting evening with three musicians of exceptional calibre who are a must see on the European jazz scene. Prepare for a musical voyage: the Trio celebrates the evolution of jazz as a fluid, versatile form of expression with airy, uplifting, textural interplay between the musicians that is sometimes flowing, sometimes propulsive, often emotional, beautifully melodic and always compelling! The synchronised improvisation is a celebration of the skill and versatility of three outstanding musicians:
Arild Andersen (b. 1945), legendary Norwegian bass player since the 1960s and Norwegian Knight for his contributions to jazz, is one of Europe’s leading jazz musicians. He had his ECM debut as a member of the Jan Garbarek Group with whom he performed between1967-73. He has subsequently recorded over 20 albums in his own name for the ECM label, with Ralph Towner, Bill Frisell, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Paul Motian and many others. He has also worked with Pat Metheny, Paul Bley, Don Cherry, Sam Rivers and Sheila Jordan.
Rob Luft (b. 1993) is an English jazz guitarist and composer of remarkable originality and distinctive voice. He is an ECM artist, collaborating extensively with vocalist Elina Duni, and performing and recording with John Surman. He has recorded three albums with his own quartet for Edition Records and is internationally renowned for his exciting melodic and joyful style and a very much in demand musician. Winner of the Kenny Wheeler Prize and Montreux Guitar Competition, and a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, he won Instrumentalist of the Year in 2025 at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
Daniel Sommer (b. 1987) is a skilled composer and high calibre Danish musician known at home and abroad as a significant figure in improvisation thanks to his deep, sensitive and emotional drumming. He has collaborated with and played as a duo with Arild Anderson, and other internationally renowned musicians, demonstrating his versatility and skill as an outstanding instrumentalist.
The trio will perform music from their acclaimed 'As Time Passes' album, which is the first of a trilogy inspired by Daniel as an artistic exploration of the Nordic music tradition. It brings the three musicians together in an expansive, playful exploration of song and collective improvisation which bridges the generations in a musically rich, creative and beautiful encounter. The trio blends original compositions with structured improvisation, forging a deeper connection across the European Jazz genre. This is their remarkable debut album, recorded in 2024, which has won great accolades including Presto Music’s Jazz Album of the Year.
