People Against Prisons Aotearoa is an organisation that calls for a transformation in our approach: not just towards what we'd call criminalised behaviour and people, but towards organising the whole of society to support human flourishing. The carceral system is an industry that does not produce a product, but a world of limited potential. While in the immediate future the cessation of harmful practices such as solitary confinement or abusive 'boot camps' for youth might not require alternatives, abolitionists like Ruth Wilson Gilmore argue that abolition is brought about by building something new. Some alternatives have already been attempted, such as restorative justice, but these programs are routinely discontinued even when they show signs of success. Other alternatives, such as Turuki! Turuki! https://www.beehive.govt.nz/sites/default/files/2019-12/Turuki%20Turuki.pdf or #CareNotCages, are an imagined future, where education and community involvement transform lives for the better, in contrast to the so-called 'Justice System' limiting them far beyond reason.
Jade Winterburn, PAPA national outreach coordinator and Tāmaki branch secretary, will provide a short presentation followed by Q & A.
