About this Event
What would the Barking Creek Flood Barrier look like if it was designed today?
It was 1983 the last time someone designed a flood structure in Barking, resulting in the Barking Creek Flood Barrier, a concrete monolith looming over the River Roding. Now, over four decades later, we take a fresh look.
Create London are looking for architecture students to join this exciting 7-day workshop (18-19 & 25-29 May), led by design and research practice Material Cultures, alongside acclaimed Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari, winner of RIBAβs 2023 Royal Gold Medal, one of the world's highest honours for architecture. Material Cultures work at the intersection of natural materials, low embodied carbon construction and construction technology.
As part of a cohort of architecture students and local young people, you will be led through design and experimentation phases through to the fabrication and assembly of a temporary large-scale flood structure. The structure will use local sustainable materials, such as reeds from the waters edge in Barking Riverside, and will be built on-site at A House for Artists in Barking town centre. Visitors will be able to come and see the completed structure throughout the month of June as part of the London Festival of Architecture, where it will be used to spark conversations about climate change, our industrial heritage and flood risk in the area.
Don't miss out, sign up for your free space now.
When does the workshop take place?
The workshop runs for 7 days: 18-19 & 25-29 May (there will be no workshop 20-24 May).
