About this Event

Learn how to use bark patterns and buds to identify trees at a “Naked” Tree Hike on Thursday, March 26 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the ()*.

Extension Educator Ryan Pankau will lead students on a short hike around the Arboretum to identify trees native to Illinois and discuss various qualities of these awesome plants. The focus will be on wintertime identification using buds, bark and other attributes.

$10/person**. Register here. Registration will close March 24 or when capacity is reached. All sales are final.

*Limited metered parking spots are available in the lot near the Noel Welcome Garden and along South Lincoln Avenue. Additional metered parking is available in the lot south of the Japan House. (Electronic payment only by .)

**This class will be held rain or shine and moved to an indoor classroom in case of inclement weather. Dress appropriately for the weather and for a hike that will sometimes leave the paved trails.

About the instructor

is the Horticulture Educator for serving Champaign, Ford, Iroquois, and Vermilion counties in central Illinois. He has more than 20 years’ experience as an arborist and forester after earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in forestry from Southern Illinois University. Ryan has past work experience as a certified arborist, forest hydrologist, and USDA-NRCS Area Forester in southern Illinois.

Currently, he specializes in forestry, tree care, and the use of native plants in both landscaping and restoration settings. He is the author of the which discusses a wide variety of plant-related topics specific to Illinois.
