What will I learn?
In this class you will learn Arashi shibori and the use of poles. Pole wrapping is known as ‘Bo-maki’ shibori.
Arashi means ‘storm’ in Japan and these techniques were used to create striped and checked patterns by binding fabric to a pole and pleating it by pushing the fabric down every few turns.
Content:
– How to create simple patterns using a bamboo straw
– How to wrap the fabric around a pole and bind and pleat it using cord
– How to create Murakumo patterns by stitching running stitch down one edge of the fabric to create a sleeve to slide over the pole
– How to create different Arashi patterns :
- Straight lines
- Diamond patterns
- Bamboo leaves
– How to dye your fabric in a genuine indigo vat
– How to set up and maintain your own indigo vat at home
Who is this class for?: Beginner’s - Suitable for all
Duration: 6 hours (Full day)
Location: This class is available at the Artist’s studio in Muswell Hill only.
What do I need to provide myself?
- Rubber gloves (these must cover the wrist and should be Marigolds or similar)
- A strong plastic bag to take your wet work home in
- An apron/old clothes (as indigo will stain if splashed onto your clothes)
All fabric, thread and dye is included in this class.
