Aquí y Allá Latin American Film Festival celebrates and reflects the multicultural ever evolving elements of Latinidad. Translated as "here and there," the festival takes its name from Argentine songwriter Facundo Cabral's “No Soy de Aquí, Ni Soy de Allá," a song which the Costa Rican born Mexican legend Chavela Vargas popularized, famously saying, "Los mexicanos nacemos donde nos da la chingada gana," "Us Mexicans are born wherever the hell we want!" Inspired by the history of this beloved folksong, the festival speaks to the experience of living between geographies and communities and honors the mixture of cultures found throughout the global diaspora and here in our local community. The inaugural Aquí y Allá film festival is scheduled for May 1-3, and includes six new works from Latin American filmmakers plus in-person guests, conversations, parties, and more! Many years in the making, this new initiative is now possible thanks to the generous support of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors, dedicated community members, and local institutions. Tickets are pay-what-you-can so all of our friends and neighbors can join us for this cinematic celebration.
Check back in April for the full lineup and schedule!
