About this Event
Stargirl is a heartfelt and powerful novel that follows the arrival of a new girl at Mica High, a ukulele-playing, kindness-spreading free spirit who instantly transforms the school. Through the eyes of Leo Borlock, we watch how Stargirl’s bright individuality challenges the unspoken rules of fitting in and how the pressure to conform can influence who we allow ourselves to be. It is a story about empathy, first love, staying true to yourself, and choosing compassion even when it is difficult.
This book is a wonderful choice for adults to read with kids because it opens the door to meaningful conversations in a gentle and accessible way. The themes of kindness, peer pressure, identity, and belonging resonate with every age. Adults will appreciate the emotional depth while younger readers connect with Stargirl’s boldness and Leo’s uncertainty. Reading it together encourages discussions about celebrating differences, navigating friendships, and understanding the impact we have on one another.
Your signup covers one adult and one kiddo, and each additional kiddo can join for $10 (limited to two kids per adult). Space is limited to eight groups (or 16 people). The recommended age is eight and up, but you know your kiddo best. Signup ends December 14th. One pair includes a copy of the book to keep and read together, guided notes to spark thoughtful conversations, and access to the hands-on activity we will be doing in the store. Please come to our meeting with the book fully read.
When you join us on December 28th, we will start with simple ice breakers and an age-appropriate book club discussion. After that we will move into a hands-on activity that reinforces the messages of Stargirl and encourages deeper connection between the adult and kiddo.
This does not need to be a parent and child pairing. Older siblings, grandparents, family friends, or any important adult in the child’s life are welcome.
