Virtual Frontier: Automotive Video Games and Their Impact on Automobilia
Automobilia is an ever-evolving subject. History, sports, & lifestyle combine to create a culture meant to welcome all levels of understanding. Combined with changes in technology & pop culture, what it means to be a “gearhead” has become a topic of heated discussion among auto enthusiasts. In “The Virtual Frontier: Automotive Video Games & Their Impact on Automobilia,” Matthew Miller-Wells covers the racing video game subgenre & its evolution into the entertainment powerhouse it is today. He will discuss video games as a means to engage young enthusiasts & lays out the ways they may be used educationally.
Matthew Miller-Wells is a 2020 graduate of McPherson College’s Automotive Restoration Program. Growing up playing racing games in lieu of garage time, he was inspired to explore the subject of video games & education for his senior thesis. “The Virtual Frontier” is an extension of this senior thesis, which received the 2019 Scharchburg Award from the Society of Automotive Historians. As the Director of Education at The Garage Automotive Museum in Salina, KS, he has been able to put his theory into practice by way of several hands-on educational interactives for patron engagement.
