Join fellow California Art Club members and guests on Sunday, April 19, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., at El Portal Mexican Restaurant for a convivial afternoon of fine dining and art historical insight.
We are honored to welcome acclaimed art historian and California Art Club Board Member Jean Stern for a special presentation on Edgar Payne (1883–1947).
A pioneering and largely self-taught artist, Payne captured the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada and California coastline with bold, monumental vision. He was a founder of the Laguna Beach Art Association and served as the 9th President of the California Art Club in 1926.
Jean Stern will share insights into Payne’s artistic philosophy, compositional strength, and lasting influence on landscape painting.

Raffle Prize
A signed copy of Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey, will be offered as the special raffle prize. Released in conjunction with the traveling exhibition organized by the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Edgar Payne: The Scenic Journey presents more than 125 reproductions of Payne's paintings, drawings, and decorative arts, as well as rarely seen photographs from the artist's travels and selections from his personal collection of compositional studies.

Raffle tickets are $5 each, available for purchase at the event. All proceeds support the California Art Club’s vital educational programs.

About the presenter:
Jean Stern is widely regarded as the leading authority on California Impressionism and historic California art. For more than four decades he served as the Executive Director of The Irvine Museum, where he built one of the nation’s most significant collections devoted to California Impressionist painting.
An accomplished curator, lecturer, and scholar, Stern has organized numerous landmark exhibitions and authored important publications on early California artists. His engaging presentations combine deep scholarship with a passion for sharing the stories behind the artists and the cultural history that shaped their work.
His insights into the lives and achievements of California’s pioneering painters make Jean Stern one of the most respected voices in the field.
