Indy Folk Series is proud to present Appalatin for our March concert. They are an ensemble of Kentucky-raised musicians and Latin emigres from Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Their all-acoustic performances of traditional songs feature the guitar, mandolin, upright bass, and charango, indigenous Andean flutes, hand percussion, harmonica and vocal harmonies.
Performing both original music and interpretations of traditional songs from their native regions of Kentucky, Central America, and the Andes, Appalatin seamlessly shifts between languages, styles, and vibes. From the seriously Americana-inflected “Down by the Waterside” to the upbeat acoustic Latin “La Linea”, to the outright Andean traditional tune “Alpa Mayo” and Fernando Moya’s Quechua contribution, “Ñuka Shungo,” Appalatin’s infectiously danceable tunes spring from the band’s shared love of roots music.
Based in Kentucky, Appalatin sees their mission as sharing original, folkloric and popular songs from Appalachia and Latin America and bringing a message of a fair and just world, one of hope, joy, and love.
