About this Event
“Anticolonial Archives as Critical Pedagogy” is a two part workshop over two weekends, consisting of a two hour slot each week, focused on the use of anticolonial archives as a decolonial pedagogical tool. In the first part of the workshop, we will focus on the difference between diversification and decolonisation. We will do so by discussing the current state of the neoliberal university and its proposed solutions to the issues surrounding oppression that may arise in the classroom in relation to race, class, gender, and sexuality. Particularly, we will be looking at the importance of archival materials to achieve decolonisation. We will be engaging with the archive as a totality by formulating an understanding of the historical hegemonic role of the archive, how it can be used as a tool for resistance, in addition to exploring the meanings of and the uses for “counterarchiving” and “anarchiving”. In this initial session, we will highlight the relevance of archives today in educational spaces. Throughout the first part of the workshop, we will rely on the revolutionary works of Paulo Freire and bell hooks: The Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Teaching to Transgress respectively. Both works on critical pedagogy help us understand the impact that can be made in education using decolonisation as opposed to nominal and tokenistic diversification.
In the second session of this workshop, we will be taking the concepts introduced in the first part of the workshop and applying them on a concrete example of an anticolonial periodical existing in a digitized archive. This session will not only help participants better understand and engage with the concepts of decolonisation, archiving, and critical pedagogy, it will also help participants learn to use and navigate online tools and databases around archives.
