About this Event
‘Anthropocene’ is the controversial and contested term categorizing a new and dangerous geological age caused by human resource extraction. Anthropocene, grapples with this term in a large-scale devised physical theatre performance that brings together movement, text, innovative media and sound design to tell a story about the escalation of consumption and how we are hurtling towards an unsustainable future. Through its 18 fast-paced episodes, Anthropocene leads the audience on an immersive, non-linear visual, and sonic journey throughout history from the Silk Road–one of the earliest East/West trade routes and considered the precursor to globalization, the Industrial Revolution, 1950s America (the advent of fast food, atomic tourism, expansion to the suburbs, aerosol) to present day sweatshops, fast fashion, online shopping, extreme weather events, the danger of atomic warfare, and the reality of plastic destroying our oceans and ecosystems. The innovative projection and sound design blends archival images and video with original content to create a visually and sonically saturated world. Anthropocene offers a mosaic of moments and flashes of characters that capture a powerful portrait of our world out of balance.
