Anthony Toner is steadily growing an audience outside his native Northern Ireland, thanks to a growing number of solo shows up and down England and Scotland, and also thanks to a decade of appearances as special guest of folk legend Barbara Dickson on her acoustic tours. His engaging between-song banter, his insightful, heart-filled songs and his superb fingerstyle guitar technique have won him legions of new fans from Aberdeen to Truro. And now Sturry will welcome him for an intimate performance among the bookshelves at Chapters (where he will undoubtedly feel at home – he was once memorably described as sounding ‘like James Taylor meets John Prine in a second hand bookshop’).
Anthony’s songs are littered with little references to the thousands of novels and poems that have shaped him as an artist and a person. And he’ll be including some short verses from some of his favourite Northern Ireland poets as part of the show, as well as some of his own stories from the road. Expect some well-chosen cover versions, some Irish tunes and some blues, for good measure. Not to be missed.
