How can a space for collective creation be established within a community? Drawing on their own experiences in the Cape Verdean community, filmmakers Nuno Boaventura Miranda and Janilda Bartolomeu and sound artist Kems Kriol discuss their collaboration on Na Caminhu Pa Acácia, the film at the heart of the Another Island exhibition.
Cape Verde is a small archipelago with a global diaspora. This community is fragmented across various countries and has become increasingly visible in the worlds of art and film in recent years. At the same time, the Cape Verdean film industry can be difficult for individual filmmakers to navigate. In this context, what does it mean to create collectively as a community? How can a shared vision be communicated? And how do you establish trust in these collaborations?
During this session, Miranda, Kriol and Bartolomeu will reflect on their collaboration on Na Caminhu Pa Acácia. Using their own short films and clips, as well as footage by other Cape Verdean filmmakers, they will explore how the collective imagination of the diaspora takes shape.
The session will begin with a performance by Chris Lopez, a Senegalese-Cape Verdean dancer and one of the main characters in Na Caminhu Pa Acácia.
Another Island
In the exhibition , Janilda Bartolomeu presents a film installation about the dreams and imagination of the Cape Verdean community in Rotterdam and Dakar. The installation offers a personal and poetic reflection on the archipelago’s shared heritage and the communities’ shared future in both cities.
