The Readfield Historical Society (RHS) annual meeting, election of officers and program will be held on Saturday, March 22nd at 1:00 p.m. at Gile Hall, 8 Old Kents Hill Road. Following a brief business meeting and intermission, David Cook, local historian and author will offer the program. His talk will be about prehistoric canoe routes around the state of Maine with a focus on those trails surrounding the Cobbossee Lake Watershed. He will also bring along some artifacts as evidence that families traveled along the watershed many years ago before the time of the colonists. He is pictured here navigating the waters on one of his many explorations of Maine's ancient waterways.David Cook is the author of the highly recommended book, “Above the Gravel Bar” which “…opens up a new way of seeing Maine and the Northeast as a vast network of waterways and prehistoric routes to campgrounds thousands of years old…” Cook also authored “Images of America: Winthrop.” Both books will be available that day for purchase and signed by the author upon request.
Cook resides in Winthrop where he taught history at Winthrop High School for many years and served as chairman of the Social Studies Department. He is a former president of the Maine Archeological Society and adjunct faculty member at Central Maine Community College and the University of Maine at Farmington. He continues to research and explore the history and ecology of Maine and the Northeast. Cook helped establish and has remained involved in the Winthrop Historical Society since its inception in 1971.
