We are proud to welcome Vicky Tennant, UNHCR Representative to the United Kingdom and distinguished University of Essex alumna, as the keynote speaker for this year’s Annual Essex Law Lecture.
Previous speakers have included senior judges, the Director of Public Prosecutions, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, directors of NGOs, prominent legal practitioners and Members of Parliament.

About the speaker
Vicky Tennant is the UNHCR Representative to the United Kingdom, based in London. Educated at the University of Essex and Queen’s University, Belfast, she is a member of the English Bar. She has served with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since 2000, in a range of positions at its Geneva headquarters and in field operations, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Myanmar. Prior to returning to the UK, she was in Syria, serving as Deputy Representative from September 2020 to June 2022. At UNHCR headquarters, she worked in a range of policy, evaluation, and emergency-related positions, and served as Special Assistant to the High Commissioner.
