The Annual Lewis W. Barton Arboretum LectureHotter, Wetter, Weirder: Climate Change in Philadelphia with Mike Weilbacher
Saturday, May 2, 2026
11:00 am—12:00 pm Lecture 12:00–1:30 pm Refreshments
C. Harry Knowles Theater at Medford Leas. No fee.
The lecture is a gift from the Barton Arboretum and Nature Preserve in honor of Lewis W. Barton. As 2021’s Hurricane Ida and its epic flooding showed us, climate change is already happening here as our climate gets hotter, wetter, and decidedly weirder. But what's the evidence for climate change locally? What are the trends in temperature and rainfall? Just how hot WILL we get? And have the last few years of climate data given us any new insights? You’ll not only be surprised by the data, but motivated to join in the solution. In this must-see lecture—the only lecture specifically on climate change in the Philadelphia region—writer-naturalist Mike Weilbacher walks you through the science, carefully answering your questions while weaving politics and even pop culture into the conversation. Mike Weilbacher, the author of Wild Philly: Explore the Amazing Nature in and Around Philadelphia, travels the Delaware Valley teaching about nature and the environment through lectures and guided walks. A former non-profit executive, Mike has hosted programs on public radio, written for magazines and newspapers, and even performed environmental theater for thousands of area school children. He lectured at Medford Leas about microplastics in the fall, and is thrilled to be returning to the Medford Leas community. Take advantage of the opportunity to do some spring shopping in the Medford Leas Gift Shop. You will find spring plants, garden accessories and small gifts to enjoy this season. Sponsored by the Medford Leas Gift Shop in support of the Arboretum Fund.
