Diane Keaton was born Diane Hall (Keaton was her mother's maiden name) and at the time her nickname was Annie. She met Woody Allen when he first cast her for his play on Broadway in 1968, Play It Again, Sam. This became the start of many collaborations between them both professionally and romantically. Woody Allen wrote the part Annie Hall specifically for her, but albeit the similarities between the characters and the real lives of the actors, Allen denied it being autobiographical.
Annie Hall is often called a nervous romance. It's whimsical like Diane herself often came across, both in many of her characters and in real life. It has a way of engaging the audience by directly addressing us, using subtitles to reveal inner thoughts during flirting and being full of quotes you had no idea came from this movie if you haven't seen it. If you've seen other Woody Allen films and thought «it's not for me» I encourage you to give Annie Hall a try. It took home 4 Academy Awards in 1978: Best Picture, Diane Keaton for Best Actress, Woody Allen for Best Director and Woody Allen & Marshall Brickman for Best Original Screenplay.
