“For me, the violin was the greatest discovery of my life and has remained to this day” says violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. For 48 years, this musical phenomenon and virtuoso has been a fixture in all the world’s major concert halls, making her mark on the classical music scene as a soloist, mentor, and visionary. With Lambert Orkis, her accompanist of 36 years, Anne-Sophie Mutter presents sonatas by Mozart and Respighi, Clara Schumann’s Three Romances, Op. 22, and Schubert’s Fantasy in C Major, D. 934, a work Mutter believes to be the greatest piece ever written for violin and piano. “It’s so difficult,” she has said, “and for each of us we have to be so together, so much in synch….”A four-time Grammy Award winner, Mutter is equally committed to the performance of traditional composers as to the future of music. She has given world premieres of 31 works, she dedicates herself to supporting tomorrow’s musical elite through her foundations, and she regularly shares the stage with her ensemble of fellows, Mutter’s Virtuosi. She also takes a keen interest in alleviating medical and social problems of our times, supporting various causes through regular benefit concerts. Honored by nearly every European country for her exceptional artistry, Anne-Sophie Mutter was named a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2013. She last appeared at Krannert Center in October 2008.
“Anne-Sophie Mutter is one of the few artists capable of blending talent, artistic character, and naturalness with immaculate technique, inner feeling, emotion, and reason. She plays with a unique warmth, soulful tone, and direct expression of feeling combined with an impressive and frequently fiery temperament.” (Excerpt from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation announcing Anne-Sophie Mutter as the recipient of the 2008 International Ernst von Siemens Music Prize).
