Animatronics Workshop Intensive (5 Weeks)Learn how to design, fabricate, and program professional animatronic creature effects in this intensive hands-on workshop at The Academy of Make Up Arts.
Led by industry professional Michael Meyer, students will work through the full process of building a functional half-face animatronic character with independently moving facial features. This workshop combines digital design, 3D printing, silicone fabrication, and mechanical engineering techniques used in film, television, creature effects, and themed entertainment.
Participants will design and build an animatronic system capable of independent eye, eyebrow, and nostril movement. Highly motivated students may advance their build to a full-face animatronic including jaw and lip movement.
Because of the hands-on nature of the build process, enrollment is limited to only 6 participants.
Students will learn to:
• Create a 3D character design using Blender
• Use parametric CAD software to design animatronic components
• Fabricate 3D-printed molds for animatronic builds
• Apply silicone fabrication techniques to create animatronic skins
• Install servos and control systems to create facial movement
• Design and construct mechanical linkages and animatronic mechanisms
This workshop is ideal for artists interested in special effects makeup, animatronics, creature effects, prop fabrication, film production, robotics for entertainment, and practical effects for film and television.
💰 Tuition:
$3,200 tuition + $1,800 materials and animatronics kit fee
Total course cost: $5,000
🖨 Optional Add-On:
Students may purchase a personal 3D printer for $1,200 to continue animatronics and fabrication work after the course.
