In this in-person workshop, participants will learn how to animate directly onto 16mm found-footage film, and 16mm blank film. They will use alcohol-based markers, collage, and scratch-on-film techniques. Participants will learn the fundamentals of animating 24 frames per second, and the basics of film handling. Participants will get to view their creations on a projector afterwards.
You don’t always need a camera to make a film! Join Robin as we explore camera-less animation techniques with 16mm film, by scratching, drawing, painting, hole-punching, and more. These techniques have been used for decades, and are a great introduction to both analogue film and the principles of animation. You can bring your own film, but film will also be provided at the workshop.
About the facilitator:
Robin Riad is an Egyptian-Canadian experimental filmmaker, who works mainly with analog media and looks for new ways to play with cinema. She dedicates her time to supporting arts organizations such as the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Center (CFMDC), the8fest and facilitating workshops throughout the year. As a LIFT technician, she supports many independent artists and filmmakers in their artistic practice. When not at the LIFT, Robin can be found making potions in the darkroom.
