DETAILED INFORMATION
Lecture 1
"Ancient Egypt's Animal Kingdom" with Prof Joann Fletcher
11am - 12.30pm
As keen observers of the natural world, the ancient Egyptians skillfully portrayed the animals they lived alongside and often domesticated, kept as pets, worshipped as deities and even mummified at death. So in this talk Jo focuses on the animals found within the ancient Egyptian world and within the Bolton collection.
(free tea and coffee is included at this talk)
Lecture 2
"Pharaoh as Animal Hybrid" with Dr Campbell Price
2pm - 3pm
Images of the ancient Egyptian king could take on the divine qualities of certain animals, a quintessentially Egyptian response to the expression of royal power. This lecture examines the particular role of sphinxes and raptors to embody the king - and other royals - in Pharaonic art and religion.
(free tea and coffee is included at this talk)
Lecture 3
"Re-rolling and Animal Mummy" with Dr Cambell Price and Dr Lidija McKnight
6pm - 7pm
How did the ancient Egyptians create the standardised forms and elaborate decorative designs that we see in museums today? Using knowledge gained through the radiographic study of ancient mummies, join Campbell and Lidija as they attempt to wrap a modern animal mummy.
(free tea and coffee is included, and a pay-bar is available at this talk)
