Animal, written and directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, is a powerful one-man Marathi drama about Dattatray “Dattu” Manjarsumbhekar, a small-town boy from near Pandharpur who arrives in Mumbai dreaming of becoming a superstar.
Full of innocence and hope, Dattu faces the harsh reality of the city—constant rejection, humiliation, and loneliness. Alone on stage, he speaks to himself, the city, and imaginary audiences, turning his struggles into dark humor and emotional confessions.
As his dreams slowly collapse, his personality begins to change. Beneath his charm and laughter grows anger, frustration, and madness.
The play explores the thin line between ambition and obsession, asking a haunting question: did Dattu become the star he wanted to be, or just another lost soul consumed by the city?
