During the late 1680s, the English East India Company adopted a more aggressive posture in India - in the western end around Surat and Bombay and Bengal in the East. It was designed to strengthen their position, demonstrate their power and provide them with more leverage in their negotiations with the Moghuls, who controlled much of India.
The English already had a territorial possession in western India; when Bombay came under the India East India Company’s rule from the 1660s, they wanted something similar in the East. So, part of the new English aggressive policy was attacking, taking and fortifying Chittagong.
The wars in Surat and Bombay and Bengal proved disastrous and humiliating for the English East India Company.
Dr M Ahmedullah will tell the story of why, how and the impact of the Anglo-Moghuls wars in India.
