Angel burst onto the mid‑70s rock scene with a dazzling blend of glam, hard rock, and prog, pairing white‑satin theatrics with over‑the‑top stage shows. Discovered by Gene Simmons, they released their self‑titled debut in 1975, a prog‑leaning record that preceded more pop‑rock‑driven albums like On Earth as It Is in Heaven (1977) and Sinful (1979). Though they split in 1981, the band reunited in the late ’90s with a new lineup, issuing In the Beginning (1999), Risen (2019), and multiple compilations.
Formed in Washington, D.C., the original lineup—Frank DiMino, Punky Meadows, Gregg Giuffria, Mickie Jones, and Barry Brandt—recorded for Casablanca Records, delivering heavy pomp rock anchored by Giuffria’s atmospheric keyboards and early favorites like “Tower.” Helluva Band (1976) continued that sound, while On Earth as It Is in Heaven marked a shift toward pop/rock and introduced their iconic ambigram logo.
With Felix Robinson replacing Jones, White Hot (1978) produced minor hits and led to further collaborations with producer Eddie Leonetti. Despite strong live popularity, legal issues contributed to their 1981 breakup. Later projects included Giuffria’s House of Lords and various member ventures. Brandt and DiMino revived Angel in the late ’90s, reuniting with Meadows and Robinson for “Set Me Free.”
After sporadic activity and solo releases from DiMino and Meadows, the pair toured together in 2018, sparking a full Angel reformation with Danny Farrow, Charlie Calv, Steve E. Ojane, and Billy Orrico. Their 2019 album Risen earned rave reviews, followed by Once Upon a Time in 2023.
In the Seventies, when disco and punk dominated, only a few bands kept hard rock and early metal alive. Starz stood alongside Aerosmith, KISS, Queen, Ted Nugent, and Angel, blending heavy guitars with pop‑sharp melodies across four albums: Starz, Violation, Attention Shoppers, and Coliseum Rock. Critics praised their mix of hooks and power, with Starz and Violation landing on Kerrang and Hit Parader’s greatest‑albums lists. Known for explosive live shows, the band’s rare 1978 Live in Louisville recording became a cult legend. A later rediscovery led to Starz Live in Action, capturing their peak energy. Their influence echoed into the ’80s, inspiring bands like Cinderella, Poison, Bon Jovi, and Mötley Crüe—Jon Bon Jovi even told fans he grew up imitating Starz.
