Have you heard of The Warm Heart of Africa? This nickname was given to the country of Malawi, a country about the size of Pennsylvania wrapped around the third largest lake in Africa. It has a rich history going back thousands of years and is the home to many languages, types of music, landscapes and hospitable people. In 2009, award-winning composer and fiddler/violinist Andrew Finn Magill received a Fulbright-mtvU Fellowship to spend a year in Malawi working with Peter Mawanga, one of Malawi's most preeminent musicians and cultural ambassadors. Magill also worked with Peter's band The Amaravi Movement and Malawian pop sensation Faith Mussa.
The result was the 2010 concept album for charity, Mau a Malawi: Stories of AIDS. Hear the album here. After thirteen years, Magill is renewing the project with some of those very same Malawian colleagues for a rare U.S. tour. To learn more about Magill, read here.
