"True Confessions: Voices of Faith from a Life in the Church": A Special Event and Reception

Collegium Institute is pleased to invite you to a Fall Special Event and Reception cohosted by Collegium and the Catholic Philopatrian Literary Institute in Center City Philadelphia. Author and Collegium trustee Francis X. Maier will discuss his 2024 book, True Confessions: Voices of Faith from a Life in the Church. Thomas Smith, Dean of the College of Arts of Sciences at the Catholic University of America, and Margarita Mooney Clayton, Associate Professor of Congregational Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary, will then offer remarks, followed by a discussion.

Francis X. Maier is a Senior Fellow in the Catholic Studies Program at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C. He previously served as senior advisor and special assistant to Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., and as the editor-in-chief of the National Catholic Register. In True Confessions: Voices of Faith from a Life in the Church, Mr. Maier draws from his extensive experience in both Catholic journalism and diocesan service to examine twenty-first century Catholic life in the United States. Through interviews with over one hundred figures in the Church--including bishops, clergy, religious, and lay men and women--Maier explores how the Church has responded to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the modern age.

Thomas Smith and Margarita Mooney Clayton will follow Mr. Maier’s remarks. Dean Smith is the Dean of the College of Arts of Sciences and an Ordinary Professor in the Department of Politics at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Previously, he served as founder of the Humanities Department and the Honors Program at Villanova University. Professor Mooney is an Associate Professor of Congregational Studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ. She is also the founder and Executive Director of the Scala Foundation. Professor Mooney’s recent books include The Wounds of Beauty: Seven Dialogues on Art and Education (2022) and The Love of Learning: Seven Dialogues on the Liberal Arts (2021).
