Speaker Description of The Discussion:
Tampa Bay Downs turns 100 with an exhibit at the Tampa Bay History Center, a book entitled The First 100 Years of Tampa Bay Downs, the Santa Anita of the South, the Saratoga of the Swamplands, the Best Little Track in the US, The Oldsmar Oval and multiple celebrations throughout the year. Horse racing began in Tampa 200 years ago (March 15, 1826) with a race at Fort Brooke. Then Henry Plant built a half-mile track on the grounds of the Tampa Bay Hotel and Ransom Eli Olds, inventor of the Oldsmobile, developed Oldsmar, nearly 38,000 acres at the "Top of the Bay" and he built a racetrack to entertain his community and the people of Tampa.
