In Philadelphia, the number of vacant homes far exceeds the number of people in need of housing, yet countless individuals remain on public housing waitlists for years. Takeover! A Human Rights Approach to Housing (published by Poor People's Press, distributed by AK Press) confronts this contradiction by chronicling the 35-year political praxis of the Poor People’s Army. The Poor People's Army (formerly the Kensington Welfare Rights Union) is a nonviolent, poor-led anti-poverty movement that mobilizes political education, mutual aid, and tactical reclamation of publicly owned abandoned properties. Jointly authored by anonymous contributors from the Poor People’s Army, Resource Generation Philadelphia, and longtime activist Cheri Honkala, Takeover! reframes the contemporary struggle for housing as an arena for insurgent planning.
Panelists will speak to the nature of collaborative publishing and the changing landscape of activism in the academy.
Featured Speakers — Cheri Honkala, Takeover! author and Poor People's Army National Director | Amanda Hall, Takeover! co-author and UPenn MSSP graduate | Ross Perfetti, Takeover! co-author and UPenn PhD candidate
Event Sponsors — SNF Paideia Program at the University of Pennsylvania, Resource Generation, and the Poor People's Army
